Miami-Dade County · A little preparation

Getting ready before hurricane season

Register for evacuation help early, then ask about care away from home.

In short

If you would need help to evacuate because of a medical need, a mobility need or equipment that runs on electricity, apply to Miami-Dade County’s Emergency and Evacuation Assistance Program before a storm threatens. Registration closes before an evacuation order is given. Register online, call 311, or call the support line at 305-513-7700; the county decides who is accepted. Then ask your Medicare plan or 1-800-MEDICARE how care and refills work if you leave home.

A useful next step

  1. Decide whether you would need help to evacuate: a ride, a shelter with medical monitoring, or power for equipment. Keep the list on your own paper.
  2. Apply to the county’s Emergency and Evacuation Assistance Program online, by calling 311, or through the support line at 305-513-7700. Do not wait for an evacuation order.
  3. Ask your Medicare plan or 1-800-MEDICARE how care and refills work if you leave home, and keep your coverage cards with your emergency supplies.

A question to keep

Ask Medicare or my Medicare plan about the problem getting care or prescriptions and the steps available now.

Questions people in Miami-Dade County ask

Who can register for Miami-Dade’s Emergency and Evacuation Assistance Program?
The county describes it for residents who cannot evacuate on their own, such as people who are homebound or bedbound, use life-sustaining electrical equipment or need help with daily living. People in nursing homes or assisted living facilities are not eligible. The county decides who is accepted.
Do I have to register again every year?
Miami-Dade County says you only need to apply once. You or your caregiver must report any change in your contact or medical information. Call the EEAP support line at 305-513-7700 to update or remove a registration.
What should I ask about my Medicare care before a storm?
Ask your Medicare plan, or 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) if you have Original Medicare, how you would get care and prescriptions if you evacuate. Medicare says drug plans can help members in a declared disaster area find another pharmacy or replace medicine left behind.
