Miami-Dade County · A little preparation

Getting to appointments by transit

Plan the ride before you plan the visit.

In short

Miami-Dade residents 65 and older, and Social Security beneficiaries, can ride Miami-Dade Transit free with a Golden Passport EASY Card. If a disability keeps you from using buses or trains on your own, ask about Special Transportation Service (STS), a shared door-to-door ride that costs $3.50 per trip. The county decides eligibility for both. If you have a Medicare plan, ask whether it includes any transportation benefit before you book.

A useful next step

  1. If you are 65 or older, apply for a Golden Passport EASY Card online or in person, with a Florida ID that shows your Miami-Dade address.
  2. If a disability keeps you from riding on your own, ask about STS at 305-871-1111. A Florida-licensed physician completes the application.
  3. If you have a Medicare plan, ask whether it includes any transportation benefit before you book a ride.

A question to keep

Ask what type of visit is scheduled and whether other services could lead to charges.

Questions people in Miami-Dade County ask

How do I apply for a Golden Passport?
Apply online, at the Golden Passport Office on the first floor of the Stephen P. Clark Center, or at a 311 Service Center. If you are 65 or older, bring a current Florida ID or driver’s license with a Miami-Dade physical address. Customer service is 786-469-5151.
What is STS, and who decides if I can use it?
Special Transportation Service is Miami-Dade’s door-to-door paratransit for residents whose disability prevents them from using buses or trains on their own. A Florida-licensed physician completes the application, and the county decides eligibility. The reservation line is 305-871-1111.
Can visitors use STS while staying in Miami-Dade?
For a limited time. The county says ADA-eligible visitors can be served for up to 21 days in a 365-day period. For a longer stay, you must apply for eligibility as a Miami-Dade County resident.
